Narcissists may not always have substance addictions, but they may crave things that give them power, control, and attention. These cravings become so habitual that they develop a form of addiction. Some of the things that narcissists “need” can appear bizarre or odd to those not meeting narcissistic needs.

Narcissists come from a different world than we do. Many of them think they are better than everyone else, and need outside indicators to increase their self-worth. This inability to create positive self-regard and self-worth leads to repeating certain behaviors, seemingly addicted to them. The behaviors they do to feel important and feed their ego may look strange, odd, and confusing to us.

~ Addiction to Being Admired
– They want to be praised, complimented, and noticed all the time
~ Addiction to Mirror Checking

~ Addiction to Social Media Attention
– social media gives them the chance to show off, get likes, and be seen
~ Addiction to Creating Fake Illnesses or Problems
– Some narcissists pretend to be sick, injured, or suffering just to get attention. This behavior is known as “Munchausen syndrome by proxy” when they do it to others (like their kids), but many narcissists do it to themselves
~ Addiction to Victimhood
– Closely related to fake illness is the addiction to being the victim. Narcissists love to play the victim—even when they are the ones causing harm
~ Addiction to Triangulation
– Triangulation is when a narcissist involves a third person in a relationship to create jealousy, competition, or confusion
~ Addiction to Copying Others
~ Addiction to False Success
~ Addiction to Being the Center of Every Conversation
~ Addiction to Guilt-Tripping
– Guilt-tripping is a sneaky tool narcissists often use to get their way. They make others feel bad for not doing what they want. It becomes an addiction because it works—it gives them power without needing to ask directly.

Examples:

“If you really loved me, you would…”

“After everything I’ve done for you, this is how you treat me?”

“I guess I’m just a terrible parent/friend/partner.”
