Job 14: 1-2
(1599 Geneva Bible)
Man [a]that is born of woman, is of short continuance and full of trouble.
He shooteth forth as a flower, and is cut down: he vanisheth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

[a] Taking occasion of his adversary’s words, he describeth the state of man’s life from his birth to his death.

summary:

Job begins this chapter by reflecting on the shortness and suffering of human life, comparing man’s days to a flower that quickly withers or a shadow that does not last. He questions the intense scrutiny humans receive from God given their transient nature, asking for some respite until his impending death.

The Brevity of Life Job 14:1
Job begins by acknowledging the shortness and trouble of human life. Man, who is born of woman, is short of days and full of trouble. This sets the stage for a discussion on the transient nature of our earthly existence.

The Inevitability of Death Job 14:2
Job reflects on the certainty of death, comparing human life to a flower that withers and a shadow that does not remain. This imagery underscores the inevitability of our mortality.

Job 14 is a profound and introspective chapter in the Book of Job, wherein Job himself contemplates the fleeting nature of human life and the inevitability of death. Yet, amidst his lamentations, he also looks beyond his circumstances and towards the hope of life after death.
