Raggedy Ann
an anti-vaccine doll (wikipedia)
Tommy Gruelle created Raggedy Ann for his daughter, Marcella in 1915. Marcella died at age 13, shortly after being vaccinated at school for smallpox without her parents’ consent.
That’s when Gruelle became an opponent of vaccination and the Raggedy Ann doll was used as a symbol by the anti-vaccination movement.

…”The exact details of the origins of the Raggedy Ann doll and related stories, which were created by Johnny Gruelle, are not specifically known, although numerous myths and legends about the doll’s origins have been widely repeated.[4] Gruelle biographer and Raggedy Ann historian Patricia Hall notes that the dolls have “found themselves at the center of several legend cycles—groups of stories that, while containing kernels of truth, are more myth than they are history.”
“Red Scare” dominates American political news: history.com …“As the presidential election of 1952 begins to heat up, so do accusations and counteraccusations concerning communism in America. The “Red Scare”—the widespread belief that international communism was operating in the United States—came to dominate much of the debate between Democrats and Republicans in 1952. On August 28, 1952, the New York Times front page contained three stories suggesting the impact of the Red Scare on the upcoming election.”
