James 3: 11-12
(1534 Tyndale Bible)
Doth a fountayne sende forth at one place swete water and bytter also?
12 Can the fygge tree/ my Brethren/ beare olive beries: other a vyne beare fygges? So can no fountayne geve bothe salt water and fresshe also.

translation:

Does a fountain send forth at one place sweet water and bitter also? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? Other vine bear figs? So can no fountain give both salt water and fresh also.

summary:

James 3:11-12 is about recognizing the inconsistency and contradiction in praising God while using our tongues to both bless and curse others, emphasizing the need for integrity and consistency in our speech and actions.

James is cautioning us about the inconsistencies within ourselves in this verse. We cannot display both good and harmful behaviors at the same time, just as a spring cannot produce both fresh and bitter water simultaneously. James is reminding us that our words and actions stem from the condition of our hearts. If our hearts are pure and filled with goodness, then our words and actions will reflect that. However, if our hearts are tainted with bitterness and negativity, then our words and actions will also be harmful.

Think about the consequences of being double-minded and inconsistent in our character. How can we expect others to trust and rely on us if we are constantly wavering between good and bad behavior? We must strive for internal consistency and purity, just like a spring that produces only fresh water. Let us ensure that our thoughts, attitudes, and intentions align with what is good and true by being mindful. We can bring forth goodness in everything we do by cultivating a heart filled with love, kindness, and positivity.

In the Book of James, we find a wealth of practical wisdom and guidance for Christian living. The verses in James 3:11-12 are nestled within a larger discourse on the power of the tongue and the significance of maintaining consistency between our words and actions. Here, James uses vivid imagery to convey profound truths about the nature of our speech and behavior.

When James likens the tongue to a “spring of water,” he is drawing attention to the source from which our words and actions flow. Just as a spring can produce either fresh water or salt water, our inner purity or impurity is reflected in what we communicate and how we behave. This analogy underscores the importance of guarding our hearts and minds, as they are the wellsprings of our words and deeds.
