So I did something dangerous this week.
I opened my Bible and asked God a question that would send half of modern America into a panic attack.
I asked Him if I am wrong for loving my country.
Yeah. I wanted the truth straight from the source, not from some blue haired theologian on the internet who thinks Paul the Apostle used they them pronouns.
So I dug in. Hard.
First thing I ran into was Acts 17:26. It says God Himself made the nations and set their boundaries. That means borders were not invented by politicians. They were invented by the same God who designed gravity and mosquitoes. Nations were His idea, not ours.
Acts 17: 26
(Berean Study Bible)
From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.
Then I hit Jeremiah 29 7. God told His people in exile to pray for the peace and prosperity of the place they lived. He did not tell them to burn it down. He did not tell them to defund anything. He said pray for it. Support it. Want good for it.
Jeremiah 29 7
(Berean Standard Bible)
Seek the prosperity of the city to which I have sent you as exiles.
Pray to the LORD on its behalf, for if it prospers, you too will prosper.
Then I stumbled into Daniel chapter nine where Daniel is praying for his nation nonstop. And Nehemiah rebuilding the walls in chapter four with a sword in one hand and a tool in the other. That man was basically the first contractor patriot this world ever saw.
And Jesus… the Son of God… stood over Jerusalem and wept for it in Luke 19 41. He loved His homeland so much that it broke His heart to see what it had become.
Luke 19:41
(1599 Geneva Bible)
And when he was come near, he beheld the City, and wept for it,
So after all that searching and reading and having the Bible smack me around like a stubborn mule, here is what I came away with.
Loving your country is not unbiblical.
Forgetting God is.
Psalm 33: 12 says the nation whose God is the Lord is blessed.
Psalm 9: 17 says the nation that kicks God out ends up in the ditch.
It is all right there in black and white.
Psalm 33: 12
(Berean Standard Bible)
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people He has chosen as His inheritance!
Psalm 9: 17
(Berean Standard Bible)
The wicked will return to Sheol—all the nations who forget God.
Sheol in the Hebrew Bible is the underworld place of stillness and darkness which is death. (wikipedia)
So no. I am not wrong to love America.
I would be wrong to worship it.
But to stand up for it
Pray for it
Fight for it
Thank God for it
That is not nationalism. That is obedience.
If that offends anybody, they can take it up with Scripture. The world never was my measuring stick anyway.
