Great depression hacks to keep your house warm
~ Saving Savers ~
…a 20 minute video
I’m going to apply some of these tricks…
I have a feeling these cold winters are here to stay, at least for a while. I’m also going to split and stack more firewood, filling the woodshed fuller. At this point I’ve already gone through almost half the wood I have stacked.
We’ll be okay. We’ve made it this far, and I have more wood stacked this year than I did last year. It’s just worrisome that winter just started technically, and we’ve already burned through as much wood as we have.
We’re not keeping the house extra toasty – just warm enough to feel comfortable. Between 60-70 degrees. Even on the coldest nights we have managed to keep it above 60 degrees. I also made sure to keep some “all-nighters” – bigger pieces of wood that will burn most of the night.
I didn’t have that before…my ex always split the wood into smaller pieces. I know it seasons better splitting them into smaller pieces, but I sleep better knowing I put a big piece in the stove before crawling into bed.
My son does put wood in the stove at least once throughout the night – but that’s not until much later. I’m usually in bed no later than 9pm these days, so burning an all-nighter and then my son putting wood on the coals later is a huge relief for me.
If it comes down to it, I will buy some wood if I have to, let’s just hope it doesn’t come to that.

I do have heat again! For those that saw my post yesterday…the chimney sweep came by and cleaned the chimney. He said there was two blockages near the top, which is where I can’t reach.
So, I’ve got a fire going again! And am very grateful!
One thing the chimney sweep said was to burn the all nighter during the day, then make a trench with the coals and stack wood before going to bed.
I’m sure I’ll be posting more about this at some point, but for now I’m busy getting the heat back up to “normal”. It’s still a little bit chilly in here.
hope you have a great day!
thanks for stopping by!!
