When Christmas used to be dangerous:
~ the resurrectionists ~

…an 18 minute video

“Christmas today feels cosy, cheerful, and familiar – but for centuries, the midwinter season was anything but gentle. Before Santa Claus, Christmas was a time of chaos, judgement, ghosts, demons, and ancient ritual. In this video, we uncover the forgotten and bizarre traditions that once defined Christmas across Britain and Europe — traditions that modern celebrations have quietly buried. From Roman Saturnalia and medieval Lords of Misrule, to masked guisers demanding food and ale, eerie hobby horses knocking at doors, Christmas demons punishing the naughty, and resurrection plays performed in village kitchens — this is the darker, stranger history of Christmas that few people realise ever existed.”

We’ll explore:
~Saturnalia & the Lord of Misrule — when social order collapsed on purpose
~ Krampus, Perchta & Christmas demons who stalked the winter nights
~ Mari Lwyd, Wales’ haunting Christmas horse and its battle of verse
~ Mummers’ plays — sword fights, death, and magical resurrection
~ Wassailing & guising, where hospitality was demanded… or else
~ Christmas Eve magic, ghost stories, talking animals, and fortune-telling rites

“Long before Christmas became polite and sentimental, it was a threshold — a dangerous, enchanted moment when the world turned upside-down and the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin.”

This is the Christmas you were never taught about.
(The Resurectionists)

…so, I’m doing this new thing where I give you a video you can watch and/or something you can read. You don’t have to do both, obviously, but I figured it couldn’t hurt. It wasn’t that long ago that I was sharing mythology folklore as an article, no video attached. But then I started sharing videos and dropped the reading part. Now, I think I can add to it.  We’ll see how this goes and hope you enjoy.

The Smurfs

ACCORDING TO A CHILLING MYTH, SMURFS ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE ORIGINATED FROM THE DEAD BODIES OF CHILDREN WHO WERE LURED INTO THE FOREST BY WITCHES AND DIED THERE. THE LITTLE PEOPLE WHO LIVED UNDER THESE COLD BODIES TURNED BLUE OVER TIME, AND THESE LITTLE BLUE CREATURES WERE KNOWN AS SMURFS. WHILE THIS IS JUST A MYTH, IT IS A DARK AND COLD TALE THAT COULD EXPLAIN THE ORIGINS OF THE SMURFS

“The Smurfs have long been beloved by children and adults alike, with their cheerful songs, whimsical adventures, and endearing blue-skinned characters. However, beneath the surface of this seemingly innocent franchise lies a dark and unsettling history, one that is deeply rooted in the social, cultural, and political landscapes of post-war Europe.”
~ one of the most chilling theories surrounding the Smurfs‘ creation points to the work of a little-known medieval alchemist named Pierre Smurf. According to legend, Smurf, who lived in the late 14th century, was obsessed with the pursuit of turning lead into gold through the practice of alchemy.
~ in his quest for riches and power, Smurf allegedly concocted a formula that brought small, humanoid creatures with blue skin to life; these beings, described as warped homunculi, are said to have escaped Smurf‘s laboratory and fled into the forests, where they remained hidden for centuries
~ another theory that has gained traction over the years links the Smurfs‘ name to the drug epidemic that ravaged the port cities of Belgium and the Netherlands in the years following World War II. During this time, the term “smurfen” or “smurf” was slang for heroin, a highly addictive and destructive substance
~ The Smurfs‘ history becomes even more complex when one delves into the origins of the Schtroumpfs, the precursors to the Smurfs that appeared in Peyo‘s earlier Johan and Peewit comic series. These Schtroumpfs were a far cry from the cheerful, cooperative Smurfs we know today, depicted as nasty, blue-skinned imps who constantly bickered and mistrusted one another
~ the Schtroumpfs were initially portrayed as selfish, greedy, and prone to infighting, in stark contrast to the more harmonious Smurf society that would eventually emerge
~ perhaps the most unsettling aspect of the Smurfs‘ history, however, is the potential connection to racism and nationalism. The Smurfs‘ insular village and the uniform blue skin of the characters have been interpreted by some as reflecting anti-immigrant sentiment and a desire for cultural homogeneity
