1. Become unpredictable with your energy.
They depend on you to be the same, consistent, to respond all the time, explain, and show affection. The moment you begin to change things up, slow your responses, give vague responses, or withdraw affection without warning, they short-circuit. They are unable to compute your next move; they are out of their zones, and for someone who relies on being in control, unpredictability is psychological warfare.
2. Go silent when they crave a reaction.
Narcissists become addicted to your reactions. I’m talking about your tears, your rage, and your explanations. Those are their fuel. So, when you shut down, become silent and expressionless, and emotionally still, they are scared of you. They will have no idea if you are plotting something, have figured them out, or if you just don’t care anymore. There is nothing that confuses them more than the fear of loss of control.
3. Agree with their insults without emotion.
When they say, “You’re so selfish,” shrug your shoulders and say, “Maybe.” When they say, “You’re being so dramatic,” say, “Could be.” Your calm, indifferent response takes all the air out of their sails. They are trying to provoke you into a fight, but your agreement serves to leave them feeling powerless and completely irrelevant.
