It’s a supreme irony that the narcissist is attracted to a premium fuel source which in essence is his mirror opposite.

Moreover, it appears that the people who least deserve to be on the receiving end of the narcissist’s wrath, scorn, and odious behavior are those he admires and seeks out.

I have done a great deal of research in regard to the character traits that narcissists are looking for in their significant others.

Attributes narcissist’s admire and respect in their SOs:

Empaths Provide “the Nutrients” Narcissists Lack

I believe narcissists are attracted to empaths because empaths constitute optimal fuel/source/narcissistic supply. The irony that should not be lost is that everything in the narcissist’s life is about binary polar opposite extremes.

Empaths by default are a narcissist’s consummate “fuel” source; they are in essence the highest grade race car quality fuel money can buy — which provides a resource rich in integrity, goodness, honesty etc. The narcissist has a “fuel deficiency” in those areas.

Empaths have the ability to not only personally experience a myriad of emotions but also they can vicariously access other people’s emotions through the conduit of empathy.

An empaths ability to put him or herself in the “emotional shoes” of someone else exponentially enhances empath’s ability to connect with others which is something narcissists can not do well, if at all.

As a result of their ability to experience an abundance of emotions, empaths are in essence chock full of the kind of fuel enriching “vitamins and minerals” that narcissists find particularly satisfying.

Due to the fact empaths are sentient beings who are gushing with premium fuel, the empath is highly regarded prize catch. Narcissists who by virtue of their low esteem are “fuel deficient.”

The Mask

Narcissists wear a mask of a false self which radiates his empathetic Significant Other’s attributes. The narcissist is aware that birds of a feather stick together. His mask is used as part of ploy to lure in unsuspecting victims.

Consequently, the narcissist will present as…

•considerate
•compassionate
•generous
•honest
•goodnatured
•open minded
•giving
•loving
•accepting
•high integrity
•generous
•humble
•intelligent
•humorous

If the narcissist did not wear a mask, empaths would be able to peer into the narcissist’s soul which is the last thing he wants.

Narcissists are convinced that it is an absolute certainty that if an empath were able to see to his unmasked true self, the empath would reflexively run for the hills.

The narcissist twists and contorts as he cowers behind his mask. The only way he can protect his false self mask from being annihilated is to abuse those whom he needs most — empaths.

Underestimating an empath, narcissists will try in vain to whittle down the spirit by misperceiving them to be:

•gullible
•naive
•foolish
•easily duped
•overly trusting
•idealistic
•unduly optimistic

The empathic Significant Other was the narcissist’s “perfect fuel source” in part because she…
•believed the narcissist was not the fraud the narcissist’s caretaker(s) had tried to convince him that he is.
•believed the narcissist had the strength of character to treat the NT in the same manner the narcissist expected to be treated.
•believed the narcissist was not predisposed to obtaining a psychic lift from emotionally wounding the NT he allegedly admired.
•believed the narcissist had the ability to genuinely trust the NT who had deeply cared for the narcissist.

Conclusion

The saddest truth is that the people who least deserve to be on the receiving end of the narcissist’s lash are the people who ultimately gave the narcissist what he wanted in the first place — unconditional love without judgement.

One would think the narcissist would cherish a good thing. However, isn’t it just like a narcissist to bite the hand that feeds them.
