Zeus, Preserve Thee!

“When a person sneezed in Ancient Rome, the customary response was “May Jupiter preserve you.” After a sneeze in Ancient Greece, the stricken would be enjoined to “Live! Zeus preserve thee!” Sneezing was believed to expose the body to evil spirits, which could only be opposed by invoking a blessing by the divine – though exactly which divinity best dealt with sneeze induced possession was a matter of dispute. On February 16, 600, Pope Gregory I finally put the issue to rest. As part of his crusade to expunge Europe of pagan influences, Gregory decreed that there is only one correct response to a sneeze – “God bless you!””
