2 Timothy 3:1-5
(Tyndale Bible)
This understonde that in the last dayes shall come parelous tymes. 2 For the me shalbe lovers of their awne selves coveteous bosters proude cursed speakers disobediet to father and mother vnthakfull vnholy 3 vnkinde trucebreakers stubborn falce accusars ryatours fearce despisers of the which are good 4 traytours heddy hye mynded gredy apon volupteousnes more then the lovers of god 5 havynge a similitude of godly lyvynge but have denyed the power ther of and soche abhorre.

translation:

This understood that in the last days shall come perilous times. For they shall be lovers of themselves, covetous boasters, proud, cursed speakers, disobedient to their father and mother, unthankful, unholy, unkind thruthbreakers, stubborn, false accusers, treacherous, false accusers, fierce despisers of which are good, traitors, high minded, greedy upon voluptuousness more than the lovers of God, having a similitude of godly piety, but denying the power thereof. And eschew thou these men

summary:

Paul warns that “in the last days perilous times will come” (v.1). A list of nineteen dark traits marks society—lovers of self and money, boastful, disobedient, unholy, without self-control, and more. The climax: “holding to an outward form of godliness but denying its power” (v.5). Timothy must “turn away from such as these.”

Cultural Climate of the “Last Days”

“Last days” covers the whole era between Christ’s first and second comings. The Greek word for “perilous” appears only here and in Matthew 8:28, where it describes violent demoniacs—hinting at fierce, uncontrollable seasons that repeat until Jesus returns.

Character Traits in 3:2–5

The nineteen vices reveal a slide from self-love to outright God-defiance:

• Lovers of self/money → replacing God
• Boastful, arrogant, abusive → pride
• Disobedient to parents → family breakdown
• Ungrateful, unholy, unloving → relational collapse
• Slanderous, without self-control, brutal → verbal and physical violence
• Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God → moral inversion
• An empty shell of religion → powerless form (Revelation 3:1)

Revelation 3:1
(Berean Standard Bible)
“To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of the One who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation for being alive, yet you are dead.

Living Out the Passage Today
• Guard your influences; turn from teaching that downplays Christ’s power.
• Practice gratitude and self-control to counter cultural vices.
• Expect opposition; measure success by faithfulness.
• Make Scripture the core of family life, as Timothy’s mother and grandmother did.
• Rest in the assurance that error eventually unravels—truth stands.

Practical Applications:
Discernment
Be vigilant and discerning about the teachings and influences you allow into your life. Test everything against the truth of Scripture.

Perseverance in Faith
Follow the example of faithful believers who have gone before us, enduring hardships and remaining steadfast in their faith.

Commitment to Scripture
Make a daily commitment to read and meditate on the Bible, allowing it to guide your thoughts, actions, and decisions.

Guard Against Pride
Examine your heart for any signs of pride or self-centeredness, and seek to cultivate humility and gratitude.

2 Timothy 3 is a chapter of stark contrasts that highlights the escalating dangers and deceptions of the last days while underscoring the paramount importance of Scripture and spiritual steadfastness. Apostle Paul, writing to his young protege Timothy, offers prophetic insights into the moral decay of the end times, instructs Timothy on how to remain grounded in faith, and emphasizes the transformative power of the holy scriptures.

hope you have a great day!

Excellent post. The summary of those who believe they’re good but are not describes so many today, who think that their worldly ways and thinking are superior to the moral teachings of Scripture.
