Zephaniah 3:9
(1535 Coverdale Bible)
And then wil I clense the lippes of the people, that they maye euerychone call vpon the name of the LORDE, and serue him with one shulder.

translation:

And then wil I cleanse the lips of the people, that they may everyone call upon the name of the LORD, and serve him with one shoulder.

summary:

After judgment God promises to give the peoples “pure speech” so they may call on His name and serve shoulder to shoulder. Scattered worshipers will bring offerings from beyond Cush. Pride will be removed; a meek, trustful remnant will live securely.

Historical Setting

Zephaniah prophesied during Josiah’s reign (640–609 BC), likely before sweeping reforms. Judah reeled from decades of idolatry under Manasseh and Amon. Assyria’s grip was loosening; Babylon was rising. The prophet addresses a city on the brink of change.

Religious and Social Climate

• Child sacrifice and astral worship persisted.
• Officials exploited the poor; courts favored the powerful.
• Priests mixed the LORD’s worship with pagan rituals.
• Prophets echoed royal agendas rather than God’s word.

Key Words and Phrases

“Pure speech”: cleansed lips leading to unified worship

Teaching Point

Promise of Purification
God promises to purify the lips of the peoples, so that all may call on His name and serve Him shoulder to shoulder. For then I will restore pure lips to the peoples, that all may call upon the name of the LORD and serve Him shoulder to shoulder.

Practical Applications:
Repentance and Humility
Recognize the importance of repentance and humility before God. Just as Jerusalem was called to turn from its ways, we too must examine our hearts and seek God’s forgiveness.

Trust in God’s Justice
In a world filled with injustice, trust that God is righteous and His justice will prevail. He sees all and will act in His perfect timing.

Embrace God’s Love
Allow the truth of God’s love and joy over you to transform your life. He delights in His people and desires a close relationship with each of us.

Unity in Worship
Strive for unity in worship and service, as God desires His people to serve Him together, shoulder to shoulder.

hope you have a great day!
