Without God, No America: the fruited plain (Substack) …“On July 30, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a law declaring “In God We Trust” as the official national motto of the United States. This decision came after a push to add the phrase “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance. The motto “In God We Trust” replaced the unofficial motto “E Pluribus Unum,” which means ‘out of many, one.’ The phrase “In God We Trust” had appeared on U.S. coins during the Civil War, but this act in 1956 made it the official motto of the nation. In other words, this was not really something new, so to speak, as coins minted many years prior were engraved with this short, yet defining, statement. On July 11, 1955, the public law, P.L. 84-140 or H.R. 619, mandated that the phrase “In God We Trust” be printed on all American paper currency.”
