The bells were to be rung 13 times in honor of the thirteen original states represented by the signers of the Declaration of Independence. It seems fitting that the Benjamin Franklin half dollar, minted in 1963, was modeled after the “American Independence” half dollar from 1926 with the liberty bell as a primary focus.”
