When your partner consistently walks several steps ahead of you in public, it’s not always about being in a hurry.

In unhealthy relationships, physical distancing can be a subtle form of dominance, control, or humiliation.

It sends a message:
“You don’t matter enough for me to walk beside.”
“Your presence isn’t important.”
“You follow. I lead.”

On its own, it may seem insignificant.

But when it’s paired with criticism, dismissiveness, lack of empathy, exclusion, monitoring, intimidation, or other controlling behaviors, it can be part of a much bigger pattern.

Many survivors don’t recognize these behaviors while they’re living them because they’re often normalized, minimized, or explained away.

Healthy partners walk with you.
They consider you.
They make space for you.

Sometimes the red flags aren’t the things that happen behind closed doors. Sometimes they’re the things happening right in front of everyone.
