Philippians 2:10-11
(1599 Geneva Bible)
That at the Name of Jesus should [a]every knee bow, both of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.
11 And that [b]every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord, unto the glory of God the Father.

[a] All creatures shall at length be subject to Christ.
[b] Every nation.

summary:

Believers are told, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (2:5). Though truly God, Jesus “emptied Himself” (2:7) and submitted to “death— even death on a cross” (2:8). God therefore exalted Him, so that “every knee should bow” and “every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (2:10–11).

verses 5-9 for context:
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, existing in the form of God,
did not consider equality with God
something to be grasped,
7 but emptied Himself,
taking the form of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
He humbled Himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross.
9 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place
and gave Him the name above all names,

Historical Setting
Philippi was a Roman colony inhabited largely by retired soldiers. Roman culture prized status; Paul’s message of Christ’s self-emptying clashed with the local honor system. Writing from imprisonment (likely Rome, around AD 60–62), Paul thanks a generous yet persecuted church.

Living It Today
1. Choose the mindset of Christ—downward mobility for others’ good.
2. Guard unity; refuse rivalry or pride.
3. Obey joyfully even in small tasks, trusting God’s inner work.
4. Replace complaints with praise; speak life.
5. Celebrate unnoticed servants who risk for the gospel.
6. Hold fast and hold out the word of life—cling to it and share it.

Practical Applications:
Cultivate Humility
Regularly assess your attitudes and actions to ensure they align with the humility of Christ. Seek to serve others selflessly.

Pursue Unity
Engage in activities and conversations that promote unity within your church and community. Avoid divisive behavior and speech.

Embrace Obedience
Follow Christ’s example by being obedient to God’s Word, even when it requires sacrifice or discomfort.

Live Out Your Faith
Actively engage in spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, and fellowship to grow in your faith and work out your salvation.

Be a Light
Look for opportunities to demonstrate the love and truth of Christ in your daily interactions, serving as a beacon of hope and righteousness.

Philippians 2, a chapter from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the early Christian community in Philippi, provides an inspiring exploration of humility, service, unity, and the example set by Jesus Christ. It serves as a roadmap for living a Christ-centered life and underlines the importance of humility and unity for effective Christian witness.
